How to video-call Konnekt Videophone

Instructions for health professionals

To conduct a telehealth consultation to your client’s Konnekt Videophone or Captioning Videophone, you have 4 options:

  1. Use Skype on a computer, iPad/tablet or Smartphone
  2. Use Skype without a Microsoft/Skype account
  3. Use Microsoft Teams
  4. Call the Videophone phone number, if it has one

Follow these steps:

1. Use Skype on a computer, iPad/tablet or Smartphone

To use Skype for telehealth:

  • Visit your app store or skype.com to get the Skype app.
  • If you cannot or are not permitted to install the app, use Skype in your browser: web.skype.com
  • Login or create a Microsoft/Skype account.
  • In Skype: Search for the Videophone user, or ask Konnekt for the Videophone Skype Name.
  • If unknown callers are blocked: Contact the Videophone owner or Konnekt for permission.
  • Add a family member or carer, for a group call
  • Konnekt can also set up a speed-dial call button, so Videophone can call you.
Videophone Group Call final

During a Skype call to the Konnekt Videophone or Captioning Videophone, you can add carers, family members or another health professional to participate or assist in the telehealth session.

Group calls can include audio-only participants on regular telephones. To add a participant by dialing a phone number, simply purchase a little Skype credit or a Skype subscription before your session.

2. Use Skype without a Microsoft/Skype account

To use Skype for telehealth, without a Microsoft/Skype account:

  • Ask the Videophone owner to ask Konnekt to send you a Skype Join Link from the Videophone.
  • Open the Join Link.
(If the Skype app is installed, you will be prompted to start the app, and you may not be able to join as a guest). Otherwise:
  • Select Join as guest and use Skype for Web in your browser.
Captioned video call with a health professional

Both Skype calls and phone calls to your client’s Konnekt Captioning Videophone will be captioned automatically.

A video call with your client enables you to provide visual training, assist with diagnosis or testing, check on medication, and help with hearing aids / assistive technologies.

3. Use Microsoft Teams

If your organization uses Microsoft Teams for video calls to clients:

  • Ask Konnekt for the Videophone email address. This is not the user’s personal email.
  • Open Microsoft Teams on your desktop, web browser or mobile (Android or iOS).
  • In the search bar, search for the Videophone email address.
Alternatively, start a new chat (new conversation) and enter the email address.
  • Select search outside your organization or Search [email address] externally.
  • In the search results, select the contact.
  • Alternatively, give Konnekt the business email address that you use for Teams.
Ask Konnekt to search and invite you (add contact or send a short message) from the Videophone Skype account.
    Accept within Teams.
  • Start a video call.
  • You can view full instructions on using Teams with Skype

Limitations

  • One-way calls only, from Teams to Videophone. However:
  • The Videophone can call the health professional’s regular phone number — either via a speed-dial call button (ask Konnekt to set it up) or, on some Captioning Videophones, using the on-screen dial-pad (if enabled).
The health professional can then call back from Teams.
  • Group calls and captioning are not currently supported.
  • The ability for a delegate to call on behalf of a Teams user is not supported.

For your IT / admin

  • Teams calls to Skype are not permitted in Defence, Government Community Cloud (GCC / GCC High) or private cloud Teams environments.
  • By default, new organizations using Teams are configured to disallow calls to Skype users.
Ask your Teams/IT admin to visit Teams and Skype Interoperability to learn how to enable calls to Skype users, or follow these steps:

    • Open the Microsoft Teams Admin Centre
    • Go to Users, External access (or Org-wide settings, External access)
    • Switch on Users can communicate with Skype Users
    • You may also need to set Users, External access, Allow all external domains (this is set by default in Teams).

Many medical clinics, audiologists, specialists and other health workers use Microsoft Teams within their own organizations and for consulting with patients.

4. Call the Videophone phone number, if it has one

Most Captioning Videophones and some regular Videophones are configured to have a phone number that you can dial, from any landline or mobile phone, for calls without video.

Ask your client, or contact Konnekt.

Standard phone calls to Captioning Videophone are captioned automatically.

This enables telehealth consultations without video, for medical organizations that ban or discourage the use of video calling on computers, iPads/tablets, and even on mobile phones.
